World is Mine's original art, illustrated by redjuice
Last week, Hatsune Miku’s “World is Mine” hit 10 million views on YouTube. This is a major milestone for Vocaloid, as this is the first Vocaloid song to have achieved this feat. If you haven’t seen the video yet, check it out below!
World is Mine was created by ryo, of the doujin group supercell ryo originally formed the group in 2007 with an illustrator known as ’119′ (also known as ‘Hikeshi’). It started when ryo uploaded “Melt” to Nico Nico Douga, using an illustration from 119. Because he used the picture without persmission from 119, ryo contacted 119 to issue an apology. Instead, 119 took interest in ryo’s work, and thus supercell was formed. Today, supercell consists of eleven members. It’s interesting to note that only ryo composes music, whereas most of the other members are only illustrators.
supercell often collaborates with freelance singer Nagi Yanagi (also known as Gazelle). Among the singles they produced together were ‘Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari’ and ‘Sayonara Memories’. Recently, ryo has released singles alongside kz and Dixie Flatline.
In addition, ryo composed some of Miku’s most well known songs including Melt, Black Rock Shooter, Love is War and When First Love Ends.
Now let’s have a look at the original video for World is Mine!

Producer: ryo
Illustration: redjuice
Release Date: 31st of May, 2008

World is Mine debuted on the 31st of May 2008, when ryo uploaded the song to Nico Nico Douga. The illustration in the video was created by redjuice, fellow member of supercell.
The song is about a spoiled girl (portrayed by Miku) who believes she should be treated like a princess. She has a very egotistic attitude, expecting everyone to work with her demands. Miku is shown with a tsundere side, and struggles with falling in love with a standoffish boy. Many PVs have been made for this song, but the narrator is usually portrayed as a snappish and fickle Miku (contrasting with the shy and cheerful manner that Miku is often characterized with).

World is Mine has proved very popular among fans, with many fanmade remixes and arranges. Among these are a male parody version of the song called “Another: World is Mine” with lyrics created by Anima. It tells the story from the prince’s persepctive. There is a version mixing these two together, providing a complete story. Many Japanese Vocaloids have their own cover of the song. Also, World is Mine is very poplular among singers and has been covered numerous times on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube. Eariler this year, World is Mine was released on the American iTunes store. It was immediately successful, and peaked at #7 on the week of it’s release.

Here are some some fanmade illustrations for you to enjoy!

As many of you may have noticed, Vocaloid, especially Hatsune Miku, has had recent surges of popularity from outside Japan. Here are some of the factors contributing to Miku’s recent rise in popularity, and as a result, World is Mine reaching 10 million views:

Toyota’s American advertising campaign earlier this year, involving Miku
On May the 14th, Toyota and Crypton announced that they would be working together and using Hatsune Miku to promote the 2011 Toyota Corolla in the U.S. Multiple TV advertisments have been released, as well as posters featuring Hatsune Miku and the Toyota Corolla.
An upcoming english voicebank for Hatsune Miku
Crypton Future Media’s Wataru Sasaki has confirmed that an English voicebank for Miku is in development. A sample was released alongside samples for Kaito Append on the 28th of May, 2011. The last time we caught news of it, the voicebank was around 40% done.
Mikunopolis, Hatsune Miku’s concert in Los Angeles
On July the 2nd, Hatsune Miku performed live at Anime Expo. The concert was held at NOKIA Theater, in Los Angeles. Many guests were also featured, among them being Crypton Executives, Vocaloid Producers and DANCEROID. Tickets sold out very quickly, and the concert was a great success.
Nyan Cat, a recent internet meme featuring a song originally sung by Miku
Nyan Cat is an internet meme which became popular during April this year. The meme depicts a cat with the body of a pop tart flying through space. The animation is played to the song “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya” by daniwellP, sung by UTAU Momo Momone (the original song was sung by Hatsune Miku). Nyan Cat gained popularity among a huge amount of people, including those who weren’t familiar with Vocaloid.
Kids React’s episode featuring Miku’s concert in Tokyo
Kids React is a YouTube series created by “The Fine Brothers.” The series interviews children and has them watch a popular video. The children then give feedback and opinions (often humourous) on the video. As this YouTube series was already popular, featuring Hatsune Miku in a recent episode further launched her fame.

At this pace, Miku seems to be moving forward in leaps and strides. Let’s celebrate this event together, and leave your thoughts in the comments below!
